Sprint Car and Late Models fans will get a few more laughs throughout the season thanks to the World of Outlaws’ new collaboration with comedian Jerry Wayne Longmire.
The Houston-based comedian and lifelong World of Outlaws fan will be bringing his comedy to fans across the nation with special World of Outlaws content on his social channels, and The Reckon Yard podcast throughout the year, and various at-track appearances with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series and World of Outlaws Late Model Series presented by DIRTVision.
In addition to his live performances, Longmire is also a successful content creator, garnering 1.5 million followers through his content series like Truck Astrology, Shoptalk, and The Faulkner Series, which has original rants, jokes, and song lyrics written and performed in the style of William Faulkner.
Below, Longmire talks about his passion for dirt racing and what fans can expect to see from him this year.
How did you become a World of Outlaws fan?
I grew up around dirt track racing. I had a cousin who was a big racer in East Texas… East Texas was dirt track racing country, at least it was when I was growing up there. My dad was into drag racing, but there wasn’t a lot of that going on when I hit that age of really getting tangled up with cars and stuff. So, I crewed for my cousin when he raced. I just fell in love with the sport. This is in the early, mid-90s, so Sammy Swindell time, you know what I mean?
It was just exciting. I had never seen anything like it. I came up in the Hot Stock, Pure Stock class, and I remember the first time I went to Devil’s Bowl (Speedway), in Mesquite, and saw the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars run. I had never seen anything like it. I mean, these cars were pulling their wheels halfway down the track. It was the most insane thing I had ever seen.
I’ve just been in love with dirt track racing since I was a teenager. It’s my favorite type of racing, especially the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars. To me, that’s the pinnacle. That’s Barnum and Bailey. Top of the game right there.
How did you get into comedy?
I’ve been a stand-up comic for a little over 20 years. I started in Houston, Texas. I grew up in an old southern storyteller-type family. Kind of heavily religious and stuff, so that’s kind of a storytelling tradition. I grew up surrounded in that, so a lot of my comedy, all of my life has been storytelling.
I do a lot of automotive content on the internet. That was some of my first stuff that went viral. I have one series called Truck Astrology and another series called Shoptalk that’s about my dad and my grandpa hacking it up in the shop. It’s based around a lot of folks that want to go out and watch race cars.
We saw you at a couple of prior World of Outlaws events, but what can fans expect from you this year?
We’re going to see a lot more. In years past, it was kind of, let’s go to the racetrack, let’s meet some people, and talk with the fans, that kind of stuff. We’re going to be doing a lot more for fans at the track. On top of that, I’m going to be putting out a lot more content that is Outlaws-specific. Every one of these tracks has a great story. Many of these tracks I’ve never got to go to. I just got the schedule, and it’s insane. I’m chasing you guys to the World Finals. And I’m getting to do some Late Model stuff too, I love the Late Models.
But every one of these tracks has a great story. So, I’m looking forward to breaking into the story of the track, doing some track legends and history type content. Like how Sprint Car racing came to this track, how it’s different from every other track around it. Hopefully, we get to do some more specific stuff with some of the drivers. We’re going to try to open people’s eyes… maybe they have a racing background, maybe they enjoy automotive racing, but they’ve never experienced the World of Outlaws. They’ve never experienced The Greatest Show on Dirt. Those are the people I want to try to get to come out to the track and really see how electric and vibrant the sport really is.
It’ll be on all four of my platforms. I run Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. And I do some longer-form stuff on YouTube. I have a podcast called The Reckon Yard; we’ll be talking about the World of Outlaws stuff as I’m traveling. I’m going to take the fans with me and show them what it’s like to chase this racing series across the country, like what these drivers and crews go through trying to get to each race. Every week is an adventure.
Anything else you would like fans to know?
I’m excited to tell everybody about this collaboration and share it with the fans. They loved it when I came out to the first races. I met a lot of great fans at those races. I think we have a Venn diagram of a fanbase that is going to be good for everyone. It’s going to be a wild adventure. It may even end up being a book.
